Is AI Chess free? What does it cost?
The app is free to install, and the built-in on-device AI is free forever. The built-in chess engines and cloud AI need a subscription (monthly or yearly), and every plan comes with a 14-day free trial — you're not charged until the trial ends, and you can cancel any time before then. There are no ads. (If you play against a cloud AI, that provider also bills you separately for your own API-key usage.)
How do I subscribe, cancel, or restore?
Open Settings → Subscription in the app to start a monthly or yearly plan. Subscriptions auto-renew until cancelled; manage or cancel any time in iOS Settings → your name → Subscriptions (at least 24 hours before renewal). If you've already subscribed — on another device or after reinstalling — tap Restore on that same screen while signed in to the same Apple Account.
Do I need an API key?
Only if you want to play against a cloud AI. You can play the Andromida engine and the on-device model with no key at all. To use a cloud AI, add your own key from a provider such as OpenAI, Anthropic, xAI, Google, Meta, Microsoft, DeepSeek, or Moonshot in Settings → Chess Engines, and the app talks to that provider directly.
Where does my game data go?
The Andromida engine and the on-device model run entirely on your device — nothing leaves it. When you play against a cloud AI, only the board position and moves for that turn are sent directly to the provider you chose, using your key. Your API key stays in the iOS Keychain. How do I play fully offline?
Pick the Andromida engine (classic or bitboard), or download the on-device model in Settings → Chess Engines and select it. Both play without any internet connection.
Sometimes the AI's move seems to come from Andromida. Why?
If a cloud or on-device model returns a move that isn't legal in the position, the app doesn't play it — it validates every reply and falls back to the Andromida engine for that move so the game continues smoothly. The header shows which engine actually made the move.
How do I save, load, or e-mail a game?
Use the menu (top-right). Save Game exports the game as a standard PGN file you can store or share; Load Game opens a PGN back onto the board so you can slide through the moves; E-mail Game attaches the PGN to a new mail draft.
Can I set up a custom position?
Yes. Choose Edit position from the menu, place pieces from the white and black palettes, set who moves first plus castling and en-passant, then start to Play or Analyze from that position.
How do I remove my API key or the downloaded model?
In Settings → Chess Engines, you can remove a saved API key at any time, and delete the downloaded on-device model. Deleting the app removes all on-device data.
